Ingredients

Whole wheat flour (wholemeal atta flour, chapati flour)2 cups
Maida (all-purpose flour, plain flour)2 cups
Baking soda (bicarb soda, bicarbonate of soda)1¼ tsp
Salt1 tsp
Buttermilk1⅔ cups
Rolled oats (porridge oats)2 tbsp, for topping

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Mix flours, soda and salt.
  2. 2Pour in buttermilk and mix quickly to a soft, sticky dough.
  3. 3Shape a round on a floured tray, sprinkle oats and cut a deep cross.
  4. 4Bake at 220 C for 15 minutes, then 200 C for 20 to 25 minutes.
Serve it like this

Slice warm and serve with salted butter and jam, or beside a bowl of stew.
