Classic vetkoek and mince.

Ingredients

8 servings
Maida (all-purpose flour, plain flour)4 cups
Instant dry yeast2 tsp
Sugar1 tbsp
Salt2 tsp
Waterabout 1 1/3 cups, lukewarm
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)for frying (about 100 ml absorbed) plus 1 tbsp for the mince
Minced beef (beef mince, beef or buff keema)500 g beef mince
Onion1, chopped
Curry powder1 tbsp
Tomato2, grated
Green peas½ cup
Garlic3 cloves

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Mix flour, yeast, sugar and salt, add water and knead 8 minutes into a soft dough. Rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  2. 2Fry onion and garlic in a little oil, add curry powder, mince and tomato and cook until thick. Add peas.
  3. 3Shape the dough into balls, flatten slightly and rest 10 minutes.
  4. 4Fry at 170 C, turning, until golden and hollow sounding. Split and fill with mince.
Serve it like this

Split the hot vetkoek, pile in curried mince and serve on a board with grated cheese and chutney on the side.
