Ingredients

Moong dal (split yellow mung beans)¾ cup
Water3¼ cups
Turmeric (ground turmeric)¼ tsp
Salt1 tsp
Tomato1, chopped
Onion1 small, chopped
Garlic3 cloves, chopped
Ginger1.5 cm, grated
Green chilli1, slit
Cumin seeds½ tsp
Dried red chilli1
Asafoetidaa pinch
Red chilli powder (indian red chili powder)¼ tsp
Ghee1 tbsp
Lemon juice1 tsp
Coriander leaves (cilantro)1 tbsp

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Rinse moong dal and pressure cook with water, turmeric, tomato, ginger and salt for 3 whistles. Let the pressure release naturally.
  2. 2Whisk smooth and simmer 2 minutes.
  3. 3Heat ghee, add cumin, red chilli, asafoetida, garlic, onion and green chilli. Cook till golden, then add chilli powder.
  4. 4Pour over the dal, add lemon and coriander.
Serve it like this

Serve hot in a deep bowl with a swirl of ghee or a few coriander leaves on top, and rice or rotis on the side.
