Ingredients

4 servings
Horse gram¾ cup kulith pith (roasted horse gram flour)
Onion1 small, chopped
Garlic8 cloves, crushed
Green chilli2, chopped
Kokum2 petals
Fresh grated coconut3 tbsp
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)1½ tbsp
Mustard seeds½ tsp
Cumin seeds½ tsp
Asafoetidaa pinch
Turmeric (ground turmeric)½ tsp
Red chilli powder (indian red chili powder)¾ tsp
Coriander leaves (cilantro)a handful
Saltto taste
Water3 cups

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Whisk the kulith flour into 2 cups water until smooth.
  2. 2Heat oil, crackle mustard and cumin, add asafoetida, garlic, chilli and onion and cook until soft.
  3. 3Add turmeric and chilli powder, then pour in the batter and the rest of the water, stirring.
  4. 4Add kokum, coconut and salt and simmer 8 to 10 minutes, stirring often. Finish with coriander.
Serve it like this

Ladle into warm bowls and serve hot, with a few coriander leaves on top.
