Per serving, worked out from the ingredient table. Grandma's way is the starting point the other versions are compared with.

Ingredients

4 servings
Sweet potato2 medium, cut into chunky wedges
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)for shallow frying (about 3 tbsp absorbed)
Sugar4 tbsp
Water2 tbsp
Honey1 tbsp
Soy sauce1 tsp
Sesame seeds2 tsp, black or white, toasted

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Scrub the sweet potatoes, cut into chunky angled wedges with skin on, soak in water 10 minutes, then drain and pat very dry.
  2. 2Put the wedges in a wide pan with oil about 1 cm deep, then turn the heat to medium. Fry, turning, until a knife slides through and the outside is golden. Keep children and the handle clear of the hot oil.
  3. 3Lift out onto a rack. Wipe a second pan, add sugar, water, honey and soy and simmer on medium.
  4. 4Take the pan off the heat, tip in the wedges and toss fast to coat. Scatter sesame and spread on a greased plate to set.
Serve it like this

Pile in a small bowl with the sesame side up and a few black sesame seeds scattered on the plate.
