Minced beef (beef mince, beef or buff keema)500 g
Onion1, finely chopped
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)2 tsp
Maida (all-purpose flour, plain flour)1½ cups for base pastry plus 2 tbsp for gravy
Butter6 tbsp, cold
Water1¼ cups stock for filling, 4 tbsp ice water for pastry
Worcestershire sauce1 tbsp
Tomato ketchup (ketchup)3 tbsp, plus extra to serve
Soy sauce2 tsp
Black pepper½ tsp
Salt1 tsp
Puff pastry1 sheet, for lids
Egg1, beatenMethod
- 1Brown beef and onion in oil. Stir in 2 tbsp flour, then stock, Worcestershire, ketchup, soy, pepper and salt. Simmer 25 minutes and cool.
- 2Rub butter into remaining flour with a pinch of salt; add ice water and chill.
- 3Line 8 small pie tins with shortcrust, fill, top with puff pastry lids and crimp. Brush with egg.
- 4Bake at 200 C for 25 to 30 minutes.
Serve it like thisServe hot in a paper bag or on a plate with a generous squirt of tomato sauce on top. Mushy peas on the side.
