Ingredients

8 servings
Maida (all-purpose flour, plain flour)2½ cups
Instant dry yeast1½ tsp
Milk⅔ cup, lukewarm
Butterfor dough and onions
Onion1 kg, thinly sliced
Bacon (streaky rashers, streaky bacon)100 g, diced
Sour cream¾ cup
Egg3
Caraway seeds1 tsp
Saltto taste
Black pepperto taste
Nutmega pinch

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Knead flour, yeast, milk, 30 g butter and a pinch of salt into a soft dough. Rise until doubled.
  2. 2Fry bacon, add onions and remaining butter, and cook gently until soft and golden but not brown. Cool.
  3. 3Whisk sour cream, eggs, salt, pepper and nutmeg, then fold in the onions.
  4. 4Roll the dough into a tray, spread over the filling and scatter caraway. Bake at 200 C.
Serve it like this

Cut warm squares, serve on a board with a green salad and, for adults, a glass of young wine or cider.
