Ingredients

4 servings
Beef500 g ribeye or short plate, thinly sliced
Onion1, in thick rings
Capsicum (green capsicum, green bell pepper)1 green pepper, in strips
Button mushroom150 g shiitake or button
Soy sauce3 tbsp
Mirin2 tbsp
Sugar1 tbsp
Apple¼ apple, grated
Garlic3 cloves, grated
Ginger1 tsp, grated
Sesame oil2 tsp
Sesame seeds1 tsp, toasted
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)for the grill
Cooked rice3 cups, to serve

Method

5 steps
  1. 1Simmer soy, mirin and sugar briefly, cool, then add apple, garlic, ginger, sesame oil and seeds to make tare.
  2. 2Arrange beef and vegetables on platters by the table grill or a hot grill pan.
  3. 3Oil the grill and cook beef slices for 20 to 30 seconds a side.
  4. 4Grill vegetables until charred and tender.
  5. 5Dip each piece in tare and eat with rice.
Serve it like this

Set the grill in the middle with platters of beef and vegetables, small dishes of tare for each person and bowls of rice.
