Ingredients

12 servings
Maida (all-purpose flour, plain flour)2½ cups
Butter150 g for pastry, 30 g for mincemeat
Sugar2 tbsp icing sugar, plus to dust
Water3 tbsp ice water
Raisins1 cup mixed raisins and sultanas
Apple1, grated
Dates6, chopped
Brown sugar¼ cup
Cinnamon powder½ tsp
Whole spices½ tsp mixed spice, nutmeg and cloves
Lemon juice2 tsp, plus zest
Egg1, beaten

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Simmer raisins, apple, dates, brown sugar, butter, spices and lemon for 10 minutes. Cool.
  2. 2Rub butter into flour and icing sugar, add ice water and chill 30 minutes.
  3. 3Line a 12 hole tart tin with pastry rounds, fill with mincemeat and top with pastry stars.
  4. 4Brush with egg and bake at 200 C for 15 to 18 minutes. Dust with sugar.
Serve it like this

Dust with icing sugar and serve warm with brandy free cream or custard, and a cup of tea.
