Ingredients

6 servings
Minced beef (beef mince, beef or buff keema)800 g, or half beef half pork
Onion1 large, finely chopped
Garlic3 cloves, minced
White bread2 slices, crusts off
Milk⅓ cup
Egg2
Worcestershire sauce1 tbsp
Dried mixed herbs (italian seasoning)1 tsp dried thyme
Flat leaf parsley2 tbsp, chopped
Salt1½ tsp
Black pepper½ tsp
Tomato ketchup (ketchup)⅓ cup, for glaze
Brown sugar1 tbsp
Vinegar1 tsp
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)2 tsp

Method

5 steps
  1. 1Cook onion and garlic in oil until soft; cool. Soak torn bread in milk until mushy.
  2. 2Mix mince, panade, onion, eggs, Worcestershire, herbs, parsley, salt and pepper with your hands just until combined.
  3. 3Shape into a loaf about 22 by 12 cm on a lined tray.
  4. 4Mix ketchup, sugar and vinegar. Brush half on the loaf and bake at 180 C for 45 minutes.
  5. 5Brush with the rest of the glaze and bake 10 to 15 minutes more, until the centre reaches 70 C and juices run clear. Rest 10 minutes.
Serve it like this

Serve thick slices on a warm plate with a pile of mashed potatoes, green beans and extra glaze spooned over.
