Toor dal (split pigeon peas)½ cup
Dried red chilli4
Cumin seeds1 tsp
Garlic5 cloves
Tamarinda small piece
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)2 tsp
Mustard seeds½ tsp
Curry leavesa few
Water⅓ cup
Saltto taste

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Dry roast toor dal on low heat until golden and fragrant.
  2. 2Roast chillies and cumin briefly.
  3. 3Grind dal to a coarse powder, then add chillies, cumin, garlic, tamarind, salt and water and grind to a coarse paste.
  4. 4Temper mustard and curry leaves in oil and pour over.
Serve it like this

Serve a spoonful beside hot rice with ghee, followed by rasam or pulusu.
