Ingredients

Maida (all-purpose flour, plain flour)2½ cups
Butter½ cup, soft
Sugar¾ cup, divided
Egg1
Orangezest and 2 tbsp juice
Vanilla essence (vanilla flavouring, imitation vanilla extract)½ tsp
Baking powder1 tsp
Saltpinch
Poppy seeds (white poppy seeds)¾ cup, ground
Milk½ cup
Honey1 tbsp
Apricot jam (apricot preserves)⅓ cup

Method

5 steps
  1. 1Cream butter with 100 g sugar, beat in egg, orange zest and juice and vanilla. Mix in flour, baking powder and salt. Chill 30 minutes.
  2. 2Simmer ground poppy seeds with milk, the rest of the sugar and honey, stirring, until thick.
  3. 3Roll the dough 4 mm thick and cut 8 cm circles. Put a teaspoon of poppy filling or jam in each.
  4. 4Fold up three sides to make a triangle and pinch the corners firmly, leaving the filling showing.
  5. 5Bake at 180°C until the edges are lightly golden.
Serve it like this

Arrange mixed fillings on a platter or pack into gift baskets for Purim. Tea or coffee alongside.
