Ingredients

12 servings
Walnutsabout 2 cups halves
Red grape juice1 litre, unsweetened (red or white)
Maida (all-purpose flour, plain flour)1 cup
Sugar1½ tbsp, only if the juice is tart

Method

5 steps
  1. 1Thread walnut halves onto 30 cm cotton strings with a needle, leaving a loop at the top.
  2. 2Whisk the flour into 1 cup of cold juice until smooth. Bring the rest of the juice to a simmer with the sugar for 10 minutes.
  3. 3Whisk the slurry into the hot juice and cook on low, stirring, until thick.
  4. 4Dip each string into the pot, lift and let it drip, then dip again. Repeat 3 to 4 times, letting each coat set for a few minutes.
  5. 5Hang in a dry, airy spot until no longer sticky to the touch, then wrap and store.
Serve it like this

Hang them to show off, then slice into thick coins on a board. Serve with tea or coffee.
