Ingredients

4 servings
Fish500 g shark, catfish or kingfish pieces
Dried red chilli8 Kashmiri dried chillies
Tamarinda lemon sized ball, soaked
Garlic5 cloves
Ginger2.5 cm
Cumin seeds1 tsp
Black pepper½ tsp
Turmeric (ground turmeric)½ tsp
Onion1 medium, sliced
Tomato1 medium, chopped
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)2 tbsp
Green chilli2, slit
Saltto taste
Water1⅔ cups

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Rub fish with salt and turmeric.
  2. 2Grind dried chillies, tamarind, garlic, ginger, cumin and pepper to a smooth paste.
  3. 3Heat oil, cook onion until soft, add tomato and the paste and fry until oil separates.
  4. 4Add water and green chillies and boil 5 minutes. Add fish and simmer gently 6 to 8 minutes.
Serve it like this

Serve hot in a deep bowl with a swirl of ghee or a few coriander leaves on top, and rice or rotis on the side.
