Ingredients

4 servings
Banana stem1 foot piece, finely chopped
Buttermilk½ cup, for soaking
Moong dal (split yellow mung beans)⅓ cup
Fresh grated coconut½ cup
Cumin seeds1 tsp
Green chilli1
Turmeric (ground turmeric)a pinch
Coconut oil2 tsp
Mustard seeds½ tsp
Urad dal (split black gram)1 tsp
Curry leavesa sprig
Asafoetidaa pinch
Saltto taste

Method

5 steps
  1. 1Peel the outer layers of banana stem, slice into rounds, pull out the fibres and chop. Keep in buttermilk.
  2. 2Cook moong dal until soft but holding shape.
  3. 3Cook the drained banana stem with turmeric and salt until tender.
  4. 4Grind coconut, cumin and chilli; add with the dal to the stem and simmer.
  5. 5Temper mustard, urad dal, curry leaves and asafoetida in coconut oil.
Serve it like this
