Ingredients

4 servings
Korean rice cakessliced oval tteok, soaked 20 minutes
Beefbrisket or round, thinly sliced
Sesame oil2 tsp
Garlic3 cloves, minced
Water6½ cups
Soy sauce1½ tbsp, soup soy if possible
Saltto taste
Egg2
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)1 tsp, for the egg
Spring onion (green onion, scallion)2 stalks, sliced
Nori sheets1 sheet, toasted and crumbled
Black peppera pinch

Method

6 steps
  1. 1Soak the rice cakes in cold water for 20 minutes.
  2. 2Fry the beef in sesame oil with the garlic until browned, then add the water and simmer 20 minutes, skimming.
  3. 3Season with soy and salt.
  4. 4Separate one egg and fry the yolk and white as thin sheets, then slice into strips. Beat the other egg.
  5. 5Add the rice cakes and boil 5 minutes until they float and soften. Drizzle in the beaten egg.
  6. 6Serve topped with egg strips, spring onion, nori and pepper.
Serve it like this

Serve in deep bowls with egg ribbons, nori and spring onion on top. Kimchi and jeon alongside for a New Year table.
