Classic sabut masoor dal.

Ingredients

4 servings
Masoor dal (red lentils)1 cup whole masoor
Water3¼ cups
Turmeric (ground turmeric)¼ tsp
Ghee1½ tbsp
Cumin seeds1 tsp
Garlic6 cloves, chopped
Ginger1.5 cm, grated
Onion1 medium, chopped
Tomato2 medium, chopped
Green chilli1
Red chilli powder (indian red chili powder)¾ tsp
Garam masala½ tsp
Saltto taste
Coriander leaves (cilantro)chopped

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Rinse the whole masoor and pressure cook with water, turmeric and salt for 4 whistles. Let pressure release naturally.
  2. 2Heat ghee, crackle cumin, fry garlic until golden, then the onion and ginger.
  3. 3Add tomatoes, green chilli and chilli powder and cook until mushy.
  4. 4Add the dal, simmer 8 minutes and finish with garam masala and coriander.
Serve it like this

Serve hot in a deep bowl with a swirl of ghee or a few coriander leaves on top, and rice or rotis on the side.
