Ingredients

12 servings
Rolled oats (porridge oats)medium oatmeal or blitzed oats
Maida (all-purpose flour, plain flour)¾ cup + 1 tbsp
Golden syrup (golden syrup or light corn syrup)⅓ cup
Molasses (black treacle)⅓ cup black treacle
Butter7 tbsp
Brown sugar½ cup
Dry ginger powder (ground ginger)1 tbsp
Allspice1 tsp mixed spice
Egg1
Milk¼ cup
Baking soda (bicarb soda, bicarbonate of soda)1 tsp

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Melt the golden syrup, treacle, butter and brown sugar together.
  2. 2Mix oats, flour, spices and baking soda. Stir in the syrup mixture, egg and milk.
  3. 3Pour into a lined 20 cm tin and bake at 140°C for 70 to 80 minutes.
  4. 4Cool, wrap tightly and keep for 3 to 5 days before eating.
Serve it like this

Cut into squares and serve with tea, or warm with custard.
