Ingredients

Toor dal (split pigeon peas)¾ cup
Water3 cups
Turmeric (ground turmeric)½ tsp
Goda masala2 tsp
Kokum3 petals
Jaggery1 tbsp
Red chilli powder (indian red chili powder)¾ tsp
Fresh grated coconut2 tbsp
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)1 tbsp
Mustard seeds½ tsp
Cumin seeds½ tsp
Asafoetidaa pinch
Curry leaves8 to 10
Coriander leaves (cilantro)a handful
Saltto taste

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Pressure cook toor dal with 2 cups water and turmeric for 3 whistles. Let pressure release naturally and whisk smooth.
  2. 2Heat oil, crackle mustard and cumin, add asafoetida and curry leaves.
  3. 3Add dal, remaining water, goda masala, chilli, kokum, jaggery, coconut and salt. Simmer 8 minutes.
  4. 4Finish with coriander. Serve with rice and ghee.
Serve it like this

Serve hot in a deep bowl with a swirl of ghee or a few coriander leaves on top, and rice or rotis on the side.
