Ingredients

8 servings
Maida (all-purpose flour, plain flour)3¼ cups
Instant dry yeast2 tsp
Milk½ cup, warm
Egg2
Butter200 g, soft
Sugar2 tbsp in dough, 150 g crushed sugar cubes as pearl sugar
Vanilla essence (vanilla flavouring, imitation vanilla extract)1 tsp
Salt¾ tsp

Method

5 steps
  1. 1Mix flour, yeast, 2 tbsp sugar, salt, warm milk, eggs and vanilla into a sticky dough. Knead in the soft butter bit by bit until glossy.
  2. 2Cover and rise 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight.
  3. 3Knead in the crushed sugar and divide into 8 balls. Rest 15 minutes.
  4. 4Cook in a hot waffle iron 3 to 4 minutes until deep golden and caramelised.
  5. 5Cool 2 minutes on a rack before eating.
Serve it like this

Serve warm on a paper napkin, nothing else needed. Coffee or hot chocolate alongside.
