Chana dal (split chickpeas)¾ cup, soaked 1 hour
Water3 cups
Turmeric (ground turmeric)¼ tsp
Salt1 tsp
Onion1 medium, chopped
Tomato1, chopped
Ginger garlic paste2 tsp
Green chilli1, slit
Cumin seeds½ tsp
Dried red chilli1
Red chilli powder (indian red chili powder)½ tsp
Garam masala¼ tsp
Ghee1½ tbsp
Kasuri methi (dried fenugreek leaves)½ tsp
Coriander leaves (cilantro)1 tbsp

- 1Pressure cook soaked chana dal with water, turmeric and salt for 4 whistles. Let the pressure release naturally.
- 2Heat ghee, add cumin and red chilli, then onion. Cook till golden. Add ginger garlic paste, chilli, tomato and powders.
- 3Add the dal and simmer 5 minutes, mashing a little.
- 4Finish with kasuri methi, garam masala, lemon and coriander.
Serve it like thisServe hot in a deep bowl with a swirl of ghee or a few coriander leaves on top, and rice or rotis on the side.
