Classic bobotie.

Ingredients

6 servings
Minced mutton (goat mince, ground goat)600 g lamb or beef mince
Onion2, chopped
Garlic3 cloves
Curry powder1 tbsp
Turmeric (ground turmeric)½ tsp
White bread1 thick slice
Milk1 cup
Sweet fruit chutney3 tbsp
Raisins2 tbsp
Almonds2 tbsp, flaked
Lemon juice1 tbsp
Egg2
Bay leaf (indian bay leaf)4
Cooking oil (vegetable oil)1½ tbsp
Saltto taste

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Soak the bread in half the milk. Fry onion and garlic in oil until soft, then add curry powder and turmeric.
  2. 2Add the mince and brown. Squeeze the bread, mash in, add chutney, raisins, almonds, lemon and salt.
  3. 3Press into a baking dish. Beat the eggs with the rest of the milk and the bread milk, pour over and tuck in bay leaves.
  4. 4Bake at 180 C until the topping is set and golden.
Serve it like this

Cut into squares and serve warm with yellow rice, a spoon of chutney and sliced banana or sambal on the side.
