Cumin seeds½ tsp
Garlic4 cloves, crushed
Dried red chilli2, broken

  1. 1Wash the toor dal two or three times. Put it in a pressure cooker with the greens, onion, tomato, green chilli, turmeric and water.
  2. 2Pressure cook on medium for 3 to 4 whistles, then turn off the heat and let the pressure release naturally.
  3. 3Squeeze the tamarind into the dal, add salt and mash well with a pappu gutti or whisk. Simmer for 5 minutes, adding hot water if it is too thick.
  4. 4For the tadka, heat oil, add mustard and let it splutter, then cumin, garlic, red chilli, curry leaves and asafoetida.
  5. 5Pour the tadka over the dal, stir and serve hot with rice and ghee or with sajja rotte.
