Ingredients

Toor dal (split pigeon peas)¾ cup
Tomato3 medium, chopped
Onion1 small, chopped
Green chilli3, slit
Tamarinda small piece, optional
Turmeric (ground turmeric)¼ tsp
Water2 cups
Red chilli powder (indian red chili powder)1 tsp
Salt1 tsp
Ghee1 tbsp
Mustard seeds½ tsp
Cumin seeds½ tsp
Garlic4 cloves, crushed
Dried red chilli2
Curry leaves1 sprig
Asafoetidaa pinch
Coriander leaves (cilantro)a little, chopped

Method

4 steps
  1. 1Pressure cook the toor dal with tomatoes, onion, green chillies, tamarind, turmeric and water for 4 whistles. Let the pressure release naturally.
  2. 2Mash well with a wooden masher. Add salt and chilli powder and simmer.
  3. 3Heat the ghee. Add mustard, cumin, garlic, red chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida. Pour over the dal.
  4. 4Stir in coriander and serve with hot rice and a little ghee.
Serve it like this

Serve hot in a deep bowl with a swirl of ghee or a few coriander leaves on top, and rice or rotis on the side.
