Fish500 g kingfish or pomfret, in steaks
Fresh grated coconut1½ cups
Dried red chilli8 Kashmiri or Byadgi, soaked
Coriander seeds1 tbsp
Cumin seeds1 tsp
Black pepper6 to 8 peppercorns
Turmeric (ground turmeric)¾ tsp, divided
Garlic5 cloves
Ginger2.5 cm
Tamarinda small lemon size ball
Onion1 medium, finely sliced
Green chilli2, slit
Coconut oil2 tbsp

Method
6 steps
1Rub the fish with a pinch of turmeric and salt and keep aside.
2Grind the coconut, soaked chillies, coriander, cumin, pepper, the rest of the turmeric, garlic, ginger and tamarind with water to a very smooth paste.
3Heat coconut oil and cook the onion until soft and translucent.
4Add the ground masala and the water. Bring to a boil, then simmer.
5Add salt and green chillies, then slide in the fish. Simmer gently; swirl the pan instead of stirring.
6Switch off and rest 10 minutes before serving with hot rice.
Serve it like this
Serve hot in a deep bowl with a swirl of ghee or a few coriander leaves on top, and rice or rotis on the side.
